În holurile marilor instituții de arhivă, domnește o tăcere specifică. Nu este întotdeauna tăcerea sacră a respectului pentru trecut, ci adesea o tăcere grea, birocratică, o tăcere a rezistenței instituționale. Aceasta este metafora „Zidului de Sticlă”: o barieră invizibilă, dar rigidă, ridicată sub masca regulamentelor, a lipsei de personal sau a „secretului de stat”.
Pentru un istoric, cercetarea nu este doar o lectură pasivă a textelor. Este o luptă fizică și intelectuală pentru a ajunge la acele texte. De prea multe ori, instituțiile care ar trebui să fie porțile memoriei colective se transformă în fortărețe care o păzesc cu strășnicie. Solicitarea unui dosar devine o probă de anduranță, un labirint de cereri, avize și timpi de așteptare nejustificați.
În lucrarea mea, am învățat că obținerea unui document este primul act de scriere a istoriei. Este un act de rezistență împotriva uitării impuse și a secretomaniei care denaturează adevărul. Nu cerem o favoare; ne exercităm dreptul fundamental de a ne cunoaște trecutul. Când instituția devine o frontieră, accesul devine o victorie intelectuală.

In the halls of great archival institutions, a specific silence reigns. It is not always the sacred silence of respect for the past, but often a heavy, bureaucratic silence, a silence of institutional resistance. This is the metaphor of the “Glass Wall”: an invisible yet rigid barrier erected under the guise of regulations, staff shortages, or “state secrets.”
For a historian, research is not just a passive reading of texts. It is a physical and intellectual struggle to reach those texts. Too often, institutions that should be gateways to collective memory transform into fortresses strictly guarding it. Requesting a file becomes a test of endurance, a labyrinth of petitions, approvals, and unjustified waiting periods.
In my work, I learned that obtaining a document is the first act of writing history. It is an act of resistance against imposed forgetting and the secrecy that distorts the truth. We are not asking for a favor; we are exercising our fundamental right to know our past. When the institution becomes a frontier, access becomes an intellectual victory.
